Introducing ‘Research in Translation’

I’m really excited to be involved in Research in Translation – a new AHRC training programme for early career researchers. Successful applicants will learn the skills and techniques to communicate their research to non-specialists through the medium of exhibition, with the input of museum practitioners, design professionals and museologists (including me!). See the Research in Translation website…

Tea caddies: procrasti-research

My little collection of tea caddies Last weekend, when I should’ve been working on finalising my book manuscript post-editing and writing a lecture presentation, I found myself researching tea caddies. Not any ol’tea caddies, oh no. That iconic black, red and gold design of cranes, Chinese ladies holding fans, and a distinguished gentleman sitting…

Museum Representations of Maoist China – lecture

Tomorrow afternoon I’ll be delivering a lecture to Asian Art and its Markets semester programme students at the Sotheby’s Institute in London on the subject of my forthcoming book.  During the session I’ll be showing some YouTube clips of the yangbanxi (‘Eight Model Works’) and a few other bits and pieces, including this lovely film of Barbara…

Museum Representations of Maoist China – special price

Just popping by to mention that my forthcoming book, Museum Representations of Maoist China is available to pre-order at a discounted (but still expensive, sorry!) price from Ashgate. A cover image has been chosen (I am absolutely DELIGHTED with it!) and I’m currently finalising the manuscript post-proofread/edit. Still on course for publication late summer/early autumn 2014….

Mr Ma and Son by Lao She: a review (sort of)

Funding success

This last week has brought two pieces of very welcome funding news. The first that an application to the AHRC for an early career researcher training programme (with which I was tangentially involved and which I will help to deliver) has been successful! And then, on Friday, I heard that my application for the Association of Art…

The Chinese in Leicester

Towards the end of my work on the dreaded book (I’m steeling myself for the reviewer’s comments due next week), I came across an intriguing photograph in Benson and Gomez’s The Chinese in Britain, 1800-present. It showed a group of Chinese children or, perhaps children of mixed Chinese-European heritage wearing Chinese-style suits and slippers, standing in…

Finished!

At long last and three weeks past the deadline my book is finished! I submitted an electronic version to the publisher yesterday evening and put the hard copy in the post to my editor today. I don’t intend to give it any thought whatsoever (after completing this blog post) until the manuscript returns from review….

Hersay

I’ve recently signed up to the Hersay network, which aims to raise the profile of female specialists in the broadcast media.  My Hersay profile
