Yeah, I know this sounds like one of those scammy ads on social media but it isn’t, trust me.
Inspired by this post on rewarding yourself for writing, I’ve decided to give it a go. If nothing else it might help me finish the paper I’ve been working on since 2015 and kick-start my efforts to write more and more often here and elsewhere.
So this is what I’ve chosen to do (and I’m writing it here so you can all hold me accountable!):
- every 100 words written in one sitting banks me 1 minute of guilt-free gaming
- every 1000 words = 10 mins gaming.
[I’m currently on a diet, otherwise I would reward myself with chocolate and cake!]
- per completed final draft (papers, book chapters), I get to order myself a take-away [I was brought up thinking that takeaways are only for special occasions but oh, how I love a good Chinese – this ‘reward’ will remove any guilt and self-accusatory thoughts of profligacy]
- per final submission (post-reviewers’ comments), I get to buy myself a new outfit!
Do you bribe yourself to write? And if so what with? If you don’t, do you think this might work for you? Got any bright ideas or suggestions for (non-calorific) writing rewards? Let me know by leaving a comment below!
